A woman was gunned down and her companion was wounded in the parking lot of St. Alphonsus Church in southwest Fresno Sunday, and police were in a standoff several blocks away with someone believed to be the gunman.

Dispatch reports said the shooter got out of a vehicle, fired at the two, and got back in the car and fled.

According to dispatch and eyewitness reports, there were two victims, a woman and a man, who were shot in a small blue Toyota at the church on Kearney Boulevard, west of Fresno Street, The Fresno Bee reports.

The shooting happened in a back parking lot of the church. Witnesses reported three gunshots were fired.

Father Dominic Rajappa said morning Mass had just ended and churchgoers were leaving when gunfire broke out in the back parking lot.

The woman died. More than an hour later, her body, covered by a blue tarp, was still lying between two cars. The man’s status was not immediately known.
Rajappa said he didn’t believe many people saw the shooting, but it left parishioners shaken. “They were really scared,” he said.

Officers were letting churchgoers out of the gated parking lot one by one.

Meanwhile, police were massing outside of a house on California Avenue near Arthur Avenue, where the alleged shooter was believed to be holed up. According to dispatch reports, police were trying to evacuate nearby homes before attempting to get the alleged shooter to surrender.
